     CHANNEL 4 DOCUMENTARY: SACRED WEEDS-SALVIA DIVINORUM PART 1 OF 4 Sacred Weeds was a four part television series of one hour documentaries investigating the cultural impact of psychoactive plants on a broad array of early civilisations. The Reader in European Pre-History at Oxford University, Andrew Sherratt, was the series host. Each episode began and ended with Sherratt inscribing his diary with his reflections on the series' scientific and cultural investigations. The series was filmed at Hammerwood Park by the producer, Sarah Marris, and her production company TVF for Channel 4, a British television network. In its four episodes, the series investigated the following psychoactive plants: magic mushrooms (Amanita muscaria), Henbane, Salvia Divinorum and the Blue Lily. Each episode involved scientific research into the effects of the individual plant and an examination of its cultural significance. The series ended with the investigation of the psychoactive effects of the blue lily, a sacred plant in ancient Egypt. Michael Carmichael, an ethnobotanist, suggested that the psychoactive effects of the blue lily and other psychoactive plants established a new foundation for understanding the origins of philosophy and religion in ancient Egypt. Alan Lloyd, the ranking Egyptologist, took a more cautious approach. After witnessing the effects of the plant in two volunteers, all parties agreed that it was a psychoactive plant. Sherratt accepted the new paradigm for the origins of ancient philosophy and religion in his summation of the series. After the four episodes, Sherratt assigned considerably more significance to the psychoactive properties of plants in ancient civilization and the prehistoric period than expert knowledge hitherto. Titled "The King of Cannabis," the article described how an Australian named Nevil established a mail-order company in Holland. He lived in a mansion filled with growrooms that I dubbed "Cannabis Castle." While working on the article, I met the founders of Cultivators Choice, an almost defunct American cannabis-seed company. They told me about the spectacular California harvest festivals of the '70s. That's when I got the idea of holding a cannabis harvest festival in Amsterdam. In January, our former grow guru Dr. Indoors, a photographer and I flew over as the only three judges. Four seed companies entered: Super Sativa Seed Club, Sensi Seed Club, the Seed Bank and a late entry, Cultivators Choice, who won the Cup. However, Nevil had already purchased all the Cultivators Choice strains, including Skunk #1, Haze and Pollyanna. Cultivators Choice soon disbanded, and Nevil dominated the event for the next few years using their stock. Surprisingly, there wasn't a lot of support for the Cup inside High Times. Someone branded it a scheme for me to disappear with my friends and consume cannabis for a week. Stung by this criticism, I decided not to attend the vastly underfunded event for a while. Such powerful experiences may be interpreted as enlightening, frightening, or just plain strange. Many take time to integrate and try to make sense of their experience in the hours, days or weeks following. Some find it useful to be alone for an hour or so to gather thoughts and absorb the experience. Others find it is useful to talk through, sharing the imagery and ideas with another person. For some the experience is so far removed from everyday reality they find it difficult to describe. Recall may be likened to that of an elusive dream, with memory quickly fading on wakening. Many feel compelled to communicate the details of their experiences to a wider audience, as evidenced by the numerous reports posted on the Internet on various websites and forums. As well as such firsthand phenomenological accounts some may go on to write more extensive prose and/or poetry. Although Salvia experiences can be quite conceptual and abstract for some, many people describe their visions more pictorially. Rather than using words, for some temperaments the strong visual motifs are best rendered in the form of drawing or painting. Examples of such Salvia inspired artwork can readily be found on the Internet. Others claim musical inspiration from the plant.
