  • Darfur, the roots of the Sudan crisis by Mr al NUR
    Abdul Wahid al Nur, President of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), has moved his headquarters from Darfur to Paris and is presenting the situation at a lunch organised by the American Club of Paris. In the summer of 2004 the genocide and massacres of Darfur burst into international prominence. U.N. statistics claim more than 300 000 people died in Darfur. Although Mr. Abdul Walid al Nur has participated in 11 peace negotiations, he now refuses to join in the last Darfur Peace Agreement, despite pressures from the West. His approach to leadership has made him popular with the victims although he refused fervently to negotiate before the 20,000 AU/UN hybrid forces arrive to insure a sustainable peace in Sudan. He is quoted to have said, "I want to be the president of my country - and this is my right and the right of my people. But I will not become president on the bones of my people." He was born and raised in the dusty Darfur town of Zalingei in 1968, educated at the University of Khartoum in 1995, where he graduated with a law degree before working as a successful lawyer. In 1989, he created the SLM in reaction to the increasingly violent, divisive, and forcefully Arabo-Islamist dictatorship of General Al-Bachir, who had seized power after dramatically losing elections with less than 10% of the votes. Thereafter, no national election was ever organized. The military wing of the SLM, the Sudan Liberation Army, was created in 2001. He claims that his forces have ALWAYS targeted military actions and its human rights record is impeccable.     Cinematic poems, awe-inspiring journeys from west to east, from Moscow to India via Tallinn, Orsk Novotroisk, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Inner Mongolia, moments of life snatched from time to invest the moment... Siegfrieds two films, Kinogamma Part: I East and Kinogamma Part II: Far East, are deliberately left open to interpretation. Like Baudelaires imaginary travels, these films are tinged with spleen, melancholy, and grief, but in there are also instances of affection and gentleness: the odd glance, a hand caressing a naked body. In this diptych, the man behind the camera stands in for the lens, establishing an organic rapport with his subjects. A woman clasps her child to her heart a few seconds after giving birth, a couple make love, a dancer endlessly repeats a sequence of steps, a drunken man sprawls on the ground, yelling. Siegfried creates fiction through the use of real images, taken on the wing, and rigorous editing. Working on the micro as well as macro level, he films anonymous individuals, workers in a factory, circus performers, parading veterans. He captures expressions, movements, people who brush against one another without seeing each other, or, in contrast, those who stare curiously at the camera. A nomad, Siegfried tells an age-old story, that of a man observing his peers. Capturing colours from icy blue to orange, he takes us on a journey of discovery of places, people, sounds. The music, which he composed himself, is conducive to daydreaming. Its rhythms take the viewer into another dimension, where the mind can wander.     "Phantasmagoria" by Dave HartYou gaze silently and stare squinting through your stained glass panes. Now pulling aside sapphire drapes of flowing somber samite Replete with glowing organdy You gaze out. Lo, a lazy mesmerized quixotic moon-- blithely blows kisses, wryly winks and coyly smiles. Yea, a light seesaw of a day of ecstasy and spritely delight-- now wanes to a quiet evening tune. II Transfixed you muse --attent through moist window panes. And now enter the past pains through a flowing Rorschach panorama of fluid specters-- a pentimento painting of myriad serpentine days metamorphosing into mellifluous mellowing nights. Now mirthful, this moon merrily mills reticent clouds in a star clustered plight. The meeting with Morpheus... --wondering of his mood-- cheery and cherry, one hopes. III In the soft security of your pliant bed-- a weary cheek cradled in thoughts of this day now blithely tread-- a voice and vision from the past-- "night night nighty nite sleep tight". IV Dreaming.. in a dream Floating in the night skyscape . . a phantasmagoria of sensual sights and sounds. . riding in a catamaran of gilded silk. . over the still quiet town. There's the tailor's shop, the market place, and the gurgling fountains of the park.
