    France and Indonesia are strengthening their cultural ties through a joint photo exhibition of their countries? traditional boats. The exhibition, jointly hosted by the France Culture Center at Surabaya and the House of Sampoerna Gallery, features two photographers: Paul Piollet and Patrick Box. Patrick Box?s photos focus on traditional French boats, mainly from the harbor of Marseille, while Paul Piollet focuses on traditional Indonesian boats, particularly those from eastern Indonesia.Paul Piollet fell in love with traditional Indonesian sailing boats after moving to Indonesia in 1970 with an oil drilling company. He spent 38 years writing documentaries about the traditional boats and their craftsmen.[Paul Poillet, Photographer]: ?The Indonesia traditional boat construction is very artistic and has high art value. I?m very impressed with the professionalism and experiences of the boat makers, particularly those from Madura.?     This movie?s biggest draw in the time it was made was the fact that it was set largely underwater and was shot in the panoramic Cinemascope. One of the taglines even brags that it can be watched without the aid of special glasses. The plot is the story of a Greek father and son diving team who fish for sea sponges off the Florida coast. They are in direct competition with another family, the Rhys,? who are hook boat fishermen. This competition for turf leads to many violent fights, and during one of these, Tony, the son of the Greek diver, meets Gwyneth Rhys, daughter of the Rhys patriarch. They fall in love, despite the enmity between their families. When Tony?s father tragically dies in a diving accident on the 12-mile reef, the Rhys? take the opportunity to loot his boat and burn it down. Tony and Gwyneth try to run away together on her boat, only to be run down by her father and one of his ruthless henchmen.     An old friend of mine, Ni Orsi, is in town and he is my guru for the day. He is one of those people who does not stop and see all the reasons why something can't happen, but instead just makes things happen. He and his wife Krissy decided to retire early so they can live in Italy near their daughter and grandchildren. He fulfilled a lifelong dream this past year too, in buying a catamaran sail boat. Ni was a member of the 1964 US Olympic Ski Team and it is certainly possible that he was born with more drive and zeal than the rest of us on average. But I love seeing how he lives his life, how so many things are possible behind his eyes. And what an adorable family he has, as supporting evidence that something is working really well.     My friend Eric got home about a week ago from 7 months in Iraq. We all jumped in their boat (Stacey calls it a dingy) and went out to the Kane'ohe sandbar. It's one of the coolest hangouts! The water is just a few inches deep, clear and warm. People setup chairs, grills, and the kids run around loving it. Our friend Kaile is so happy her Dad is home. :-) Plus the Blue Angels were in town doing some acrobatics in the skies overhead. And we were able to play with the Funhogs new stand up paddle board.
