But after one of its tour buses left Ottawa, the bus driver discovered that someone had cut thin slashes in the vehicle?s front tires.According to the driver, if he hadn?t noticed the slashes in time, the tires could have burst when the bus drove on the highway.[Mr. Liang, Shen Yun Performing Arts Bus Driver]:?The cuts were all 4 to 5 inches in length. When I went to the vehicle service station for an inspection, they said the cuts were made by a very thin craft knife that had a very sharp blade. They suggested we change the tires, because if we traveled on the highway, when the temperature rises from rotation of the tires, particularly on the side spots where it was thin, if the front tires burst, the vehicle would become very difficult to control.?So who slashed the tires? Police in Ottawa say the case is still under investigation. But the head of the organization that?s presenting Shen Yun in Canada suspects agents of the Chinese Communist Party?or CCP?tried to sabotage the bus.[Li Xun, President, Canada Falun Dafa Association]:?Actually, the Chinese communist regime interferes with Shen Yun in Canada every year.?New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts seeks to provide authentic Chinese culture?culture that was intentionally destroyed in the 1960s and ?70s under the Communist Party. Some of Shen Yun?s songs and dances also allude to the CCP?s persecution of the Falun Dafa spiritual group.Over the past year, the CCP has tried to intervene in several arts events portraying what it deems ?sensitive? topics.     Have you read the Newsweek article, ?Are We There Yet??? It is a milestone. It explores the 40th anniversary of 46 women at Newsweek who filed a sex discrimination case with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. What the article uncovers is that room still exists for improvement despite the progress from the 1970 action. Acknowledging that women's rights are far from won is a major admission within mainstream media. It usually bends over backwards to declare feminism dead. The most startling fact is that young women at Newsweek had no inkling of the 1970 discrimination case. Feminists?old and young alike?have to ask, how did this happen? How is our collective memory lost so readily? If no women's history is taught in high schools or colleges, how can we, in a feminist consciousness raising way, fill this void? Maria Frazer Dougherty, my paternal grandmother, died in 1959. I was eleven. Not until the 80s did I learn about her Votes for Women work or her activism in the ?wets? campaign to repeal prohibition. Today, women who waged the discrimination case at Newsweek are still alive. Much of the activism that surged then has participants, sages available for live history lessons. Five documentary films about the Second Wave struggle for completion funds. But here, too, discrimination is great. ?Theme not universal? the filmmakers are told repeatedly by funders. Young women are deprived of seeing this vital era on celluloid. In the 70s, we resurrected the stories of women who went before us. We built institutions in order to share those stories---The Feminist Press, Triple Jeopardy, Olivia Records. While we did not always succeed, when we did, it was joyous.     Pork Dukes "Devil Driver", Live 9-20-2009 at Jammin' Java, Vienna, Virginia. This song pulled from 1979's Pig out of hell. And why yes, that's a lyric sheet the guest singer/show unpromoter is cheating off of while the ever professional "Flash" from Florida's F does a top notch job. In 2001, the Pork Dukes reformed, after a long break - doing other things of course over the years. Returning to the band on drums was Bonk (aka. Rocky Rhythm), the Goldring Bros. and new member Andy who in turn was replaced by Vince Santini (ex-The Revillos) on bass guitar / vocals, who both replace Scabs the original '76 bassist. For this latest US jaunt, Flash from F was drafted in to handle vocals on a tour that took in PA, this date in VA & west coast dates in NV & CA. Pork Dukes are in no fear of being known as anything less than an awesome live band by those people who can hone in on their existence. It's a stroke of luck that this band did happen to have it's records show up in the DC area in the late 70s, and are fondly remembered by a disparate bunch of aging rockers. We tender this video in the hopes a whole new generation of kids catch them before they need walkers. We'll close in saying, Bonk has a book out, FUCKING BUY IT.
