    South Korea's ruling party secured a surprise win in parliamentary by-elections on Wednesday. They took more than half of the seats up for grabs. Lee's Grand National Party won five of the eight National Assembly seats in the electoral contest. One of the president's closest political advisors, Lee Jae-oh, won his seat handsomely, defeating a high profile rival close to the deceased former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung. The win will boost the political standing of President Lee Myung-bak. The president had been fighting speculation his rule was entering a "lame duck" period. Democratic candidate Mark Critz made jobs and veterans his top two priorities and for pictures he stood with miners in coal fields. He won -- and that's got Democrats excited. Pelosi doesn't have voters as scared as Fox news woul dhave you imagine. And frustrated working Pennyslvanians didn't embrace tea party rage. Instead, in a tough-hit working distrcit, organized labor turned out -- with a strong message on fair trade and busting the banksters. And CRITZ won. Is the lesson that Dems can relax for the fall? Hardly. It may well be a lesson that 33,000 phone calls, 16,000 door-knocks and 75,000 worksite flyers at 63 work district work sites did. That's what the AFL-CIO say they did for CRITZ this season.   • Drug hitmen kill 17 at party in Mexico
     Drug hitmen have stormed a birthday party and killed 17 people, including the person who was celebrating their birthday in the northern Mexican city of Torreon on Sunday. Gunmen in five SUVs drove up to the party in a walled patio and garden on the outskirts of the city in Coahuila state across from Texas, smashed down the door and opened fire with automatic rifles on party-goers. "They came in, opened fire and shot against everything that moved," said an official at the prosecutor's office who declined to be identified. Photos showed blood-stained floor tiles, overturned chairs and musical instruments by a beer tent abandoned as the people in their 20s and 30s ran in panic. The prosecutor's office in Coahuila said eighteen people were injured in the attack and taken to a Torreon hospital. The party garden was strewn with more than 100 bullet casings. No arrests have been made and Mexico's attorney general's office has blamed organised crime for the attack. The shootings come a few days after a drug gang detonated a car bomb in Ciudad Juarez, killing four people in the first attack of its kind in Mexico's drug war. Federal police blamed La Linea, the armed wing of the powerful Juarez cartel, for the car bomb and Mexico's security ministry said it was retaliation for the arrest of a cartel member. In Torreon, it was not clear which cartel was responsible for the attack but the area, a key transit point along smuggling routes into the United States, is being fought over by the Sinaloa cartel led by Mexico's most-wanted man, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, and the Zetas gang from northeastern Mexico. Once quiet northern industrial cities such as Torreon and nearby Monterrey have seen a surge in drug killings in the past six months as the Zetas fight the Sinaloans and the Gulf cartel that controls much of the smuggling routes into Texas. The attacks highlight the challenges facing President Felipe Calderon's new interior minister, who took up his job this week facing criticism that he lacked experience to deal with drug cartels. More than 26,000 people have died in drug violence across Mexico since Calderon took office and launched a crackdown on cartels in December 2006.     A five-star residential complex for cricketers is stirring controversy here in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. The state's Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for building to start in Kandi village, near Dharamshala in December. However, a large number of trees are being chopped down to be used in the construction. This has raised questions in the opposition Congress Party. On the one hand, you are promoting conservation but here, in a state where felling is illegal, how can you cut trees for a five-star hotel? The government should stop the construction immediately.? The IPL cricket tournament kicks off in April, which means the facilities need be ready for the players.     A former businesswoman from China's Liaoning Province has been denied medical parole, after developing severe hypertension in prison. Her daughter, a San Diego resident, says the Chinese regime has been persecuting her mother for practicing Falun Gong.Wang Chunyan was a successful businesswoman from Dalian in China?s north-eastern Liaoning Province. In 1999 she started practicing Falun Gong?a traditional Chinese spiritual discipline with Buddhist and Taoist principles. That same year on July 22nd, the Chinese Communist Party launched a brutal persecution campaign, attempting to eradicate the practice, forcing adherents to renounce their beliefs.Since then Wang?s life took a turn. Her daughter Yu Ping says she was arrested many times and in 2001 was illegally sentenced to two years in prison. As she continued to practice Falun Gong, Wang was arrested again in 2007 and sentenced to five years in prison. She?s now at the Dabei Women's Prison.Yu Ping, who lives in San Diego, says prison officials notified her family in May that her mother had hypertension. Wang?s blood pressure (240/140) was so high it placed her above Stage 4 Hypertension?a condition needing immediate medical attention and which could result in organ failure.But Yu says prison officials have denied her mother medical parole.     The Chinese regime is planning a multi-billion dollar expansion of its media network abroad. A new version of the regime?s largest English language newspaper came out last week. During its effort to reach the international community, however, journalists inside China are facing tougher restrictions on press freedom. Last week, the Chinese regime?s largest English language newspaper?China Daily?came out with its biggest makeover since it was founded in 1981. [...]While the regime is trying to gain a foothold on the world?s media stage, back home its tight grip on freedom of expression shows no signs of easing up.Last month, the agency responsible for press accreditation, the General Administration of Press and Publications outlawed independent online news-services. It says online journalists ?except those from state-sanctioned media?will not be issued press-cards, cannot carry out interviews or make news reports.
