  • Indonesian Batik Producers Concerned Over Chinese Imports
    The makers of traditional batik (pron buh TEEK) in West Java are working to improve their product as Chinese imports to the region increase. Batik, a traditional fabric made by using a manual wax-resistant dye technique, is worn in several Southeast Asian countries and has historical roots in Indonesia. Cirebon is the biggest batik production center in West Java with 700 batik producers. Batik is a main source of income for people in the village and helps to preserve their cultural heritage.But a new ASEAN -China Free Trade Agreement agreed on in January threatens to put local artisans out of business, with increased imports from China.[Edy Baredi, Batik Producer]: "I think batik producers must be more creative by creating designs that compete with Indonesian or overseas markets, so Insha'Allah (God willing) there wouldn't be obstacles for us." Despite the influx of foreign products in the market, local interest in batik remains high and demand remains stable.[Nur Halimah, Cirebon Resident]: "I think local batik is better and, as I am a Cirebon resident, it's better that I wear a local one." Analysts say mass-produced goods -- like toys or snacks -- are likely to be most affected by the agreement.     Greek taxi drivers are unhappy over the government?s tax reform plans. They held a rally to protest against the hike in taxes and fuel costs. Taxi drivers held a demonstration in a square in Athens, Greece on Thursday. They are opposed to tax reforms that will make drivers pay more money at a time when they are having a hard time earning a living. [Michael Skoutas, Taxi Owner]: (Male, Greek)"Their goal is to raise taxes with the result that our income will shrink. Taxes here, taxes there. If they keep imposing taxes on everything, like taxes on fuel, and our costs keep increasing, like our insurance costs which have gone up, then what will happen to us in the end?" The drivers are also opposed to a hike on the fuel tax.And gas station owners are worried that their businesses will be affected. The protests are seen as a test for the government on whether it will stick to the program or bow to protesters.     According to Jewish folklore, 4,000 years ago Abraham entered the Machpela cave to bury his wife, Sara. He, too, was buried there after death along with his son, grandsons and their wives. Abraham is also the patriarch of the Muslim religion. A synagogue was the first structure built here, but a thousand years ago Christian crusaders converted it into a church. And 300 years later, Muslims renovated it into a mosque, and it has remained one ever since. But controversy is brewing over an Israeli government decision to officially recognize it as a Jewish heritage site. Some agree with the move, saying Jews, Muslims and Christians should be able to pray there all the same. [Khaled Osaily, Hebron Mayor]: (Male, English) "It's a heritage for humanity, not just for the Jews. It's very important for Christians too, for Christianity." Hebron resident Noam Arnon agrees. [Noam Arnon, Hebron Settlers' Spokesman]: (Male, English) "From 1267 to 1967 this place was closed for Jews and Christians. So now it is open. It should be opened to all for worship. This is what we demand." But some Muslims say it?s an Islamic holy site that should only have Muslims pray inside. [Abed Muhtaseb, Shop Owner]: (Male, Arabic) ?I am disappointed. I live according to God. This mosque is Muslim not Jewish, since the Umayad Period. According to the Muslim beliefs, Jews and Christian people can visit but they cannot pray in the mosque.?   • Toyota Addresses Customer Concerns over Prius Brakes
    Coming on the heels of Toyota's massive recall regarding stuck accelerators on millions of its cars, Toyota says its biggest concern is its customers. [Hiroyuki Yokoyama, Toyota Managing Officer]: "When we've been told something by our customers, our goal is to respond as soon as possible and we have already changed the design for the Prius from January." Toyota's North American and Japanese dealers have received several dozen complaints concerning what drivers characterized as insufficient braking on its new Prius hybrid car when driving over bumpy or frozen roads. The braking was described as a side effect of the anti-lock braking system used by the Prius. Toyota assured customers that this would not affect the stopping distance needed. [Hiroyuki Yokoyama, Toyota Managing Officer]: "As for the questions regarding whether the stopping distance will increase, if one strongly pushes on the brake, there is no problem with the car stopping." The company has yet to announce any specific measures, although Yokoyama said that the company hopes to have a solution as soon as possible. The massive recall and now the possible problem with the Prius have caused some customers to question the automaker?s reputation. "So far Toyota has always been the number one in the world and it was trusted by everybody. But now, unlike before, I would hesitate before buying a car."     While still reeling from its worse flood in history, Pakistan was hit with another disaster this week. A deadly blast went off in Lahore on September 1st, leaving at least 20 people dead.Life goes on for residents of Lahore in eastern Pakistan, but many are in a state of shock, a day after three bombs killed at least 20 people and injured 170.Police said two suicide bombers blew themselves up at a busy Shi'ite procession.The street outside the mosque was littered with body parts and the wreckage of burnt out vehicles on Thursday, as residents tried to make sense of the attack."This is not the work of Muslims. I can't understand who carried out such things. It does not matter whose procession it was, but such things should never happen."Others called for action from the government, already burdened by the impact of the worst floods on record."We strongly condemn it.     100 Indian fishermen are on their way home today after spending nearly three years in a Pakistani jail. India and Pakistan often detain fisherman for straying into each other's waters.Pakistan has just freed about 100 Indian fishermen in the northern state of Punjab. They were released after spending nearly three years in jail.India shares an expansive oceanic border with Pakistan that isn?t clearly defined.While netting a catch, fishermen from both countries often stray into each other's territory? getting arrested and jailed."There should be proper demarcation (in the sea) so that people from one side don't trespass into the other side and vice versa. It will be a great service. This is our request."Most of the fishermen say they were treated well."We were arrested in 2007. However during all these years Pakistan police personnel never even slapped us. We feel great, going home.     An earthquake killing up to 200,000 people would have been bad enough anywhere, but in Haiti, where AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria are rampant, it may create one of the worst medical disasters ever.Medical teams pouring in to set up mobile hospitals say they are already overwhelmed by the casualties and fear the worst is far from over.Haitian government officials say the death toll from Tuesday's magnitude seven quake is likely to be up to 200,000, and nobody has even begun to count the injuries, including crushed or amputated limbs, compound fractures and lacerations.Without quick treatment, these wounds will become infected.[Medecines Sans Frontieres Doctor]:"Lots of the injuries are open fractures, which will need a rapid amputation if we don't want gangrene, bacterial decay or septic problems."If there is no room in field hospitals, then treatment is provided in makeshift hospitals, where operating rooms are sectioned off with sheets.     On Thursday, Indian doctors said that it was hard to prove that a new supervirus - a gene called NDM-1, could be attributed to medical tourism in the country alone. So far, patients from South Asia, Britain and the U.S. have been affected by the bug. [Dr. Kushagraha Katariya, CEO, Artemis Health Institute]: (English) "It is very hard to say it is the medical tourists who have actually brought the bug from India or from Southeast Asia to the United Kingdom. That being said, it is a very important point all the same. Antibiotic policies, how antibiotics are used to control infections and the type of antibiosis given at a variety of different institutes is very, very important." Some foreign patients receiving treatment at one hospital in Gurgaon are pleased with its general hygiene and cleanliness. [Donatus Umemmuo, Patient from Nigeria]: "The overall standard is high, the hygiene is perfect because in a day you always have cleaners coming out about four times or five times to clean, so hygiene is okay." [Basim A Allah Hani, Patient from Iraq]: (male, Arabic) "The hospital is very good. I only hope in future I can get some Iraqi food." But scientists say the new superbug from India could spread around the world -- in part because of medical tourism -- with scientists saying there are almost no drugs to treat it. U.S. health officials say there have been three cases so far in the United States -- all from patients who received recent medical care in India, a country where people often travel in search of affordable healthcare. In a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal on Wednesday, it was found NDM-1 was becoming more common in Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan and was also imported back to Britain in patients returning after treatment.     On Wednesday, Pakistan's Interior Minister said his government will cooperate with the United States in identifying the man arrested over the failed Times Square car bomb attack in New York. U.S. officials arrested Faisal Shahzad, a 30-year-old Pakistani-born American late on Monday at JFK International Airport in New York. He was removed from a plane as it was about to take off for Dubai. The U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan met Pakistan?s foreign and interior ministers late on Tuesday night and talked about the issue.
