     The doctor at the centre of the MMR row has been struck off the medical register. Andrew Wakefield was found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical Council (GMC) at a hearing in central London. He acted in a way that was "dishonest", "misleading" and "irresponsible" while carrying out research into a possible link between the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, bowel disease and autism, the GMC said. Furthermore, he "abused his position of trust" and "brought the medical profession into disrepute" in studies he carried out on children. The GMC said there had been "multiple separate instances of serious professional misconduct".      Friends and family sang and danced in tribute to late punk legend Malcolm McLaren at his funeral. McLaren - best known as the manager of the Sex Pistols - was given a suitably flamboyant send-off as his coffin was led through the streets of central London in a traditional horse-drawn carriage. Mourners including McLaren's former partner Dame Vivienne Westwood, friend Sir Bob Geldof and Sex Pistols' drummer Paul Cook sang along to McLaren's recording of Max Bygraves' You Need Hands. The 200-strong funeral party was also encouraged to dance around and throw up their hands. McLaren's black coffin, which was spray-painted with the words "too fast to live too young to die", was carried out of de-consecrated St Mary Magdalene Church to the strains of Sex Pistol Sid Vicious' version of Frank Sinatra's My Way. The coffin's slogan was the name of McLaren's shop on King's Road - London's centre of punk fashion in the 1970s - before it was renamed "Sex".   • Tree-power takes on Coal in Australia
    Tree-power is taking on coal in an Australian power-station trial. In a drought stricken rural area in New South Wales, more than 200,000 eucalypt trees are being planted as a new source of renewable energy.The Wallerawang coal fired power station may be one of the smaller power stations in the state of New South Wales, but it still has the capacity to produce 1000 megawatts of electricity. It has also become the centre of an experiment. In a new trial, harvested mallee trees, a variety of native eucalyptus, are being turned into biomass pellets. The pellets, which are the wood broken down, dried and compressed, are then used as fuel at the Wallerawang Power Station near Lithgow, Australia. Delta Energy, one of the largest power generators in Australia, has backed the project. They say the technology has promise as a clean, self-sustaining source of energy. [...] Delta Energy hopes that the pellets can replace a quarter of the coal used at the station in the first stage of the project. Eventually, they hope to reduce overall coal consumption in their power stations and reduce CO2 emissions significantly.What makes this project even more advantageous to Australia is that drought stricken farmers who have been suffering for years can plant and harvest the mallee trees. Farmer Chris Jones, is taking part in the new trial project and is planting around 50,000 mallee trees. In the past he actually used to clear them off his farm.   • Russian rocket launches from Kazakhstan
     A Russian rocket has blasted off from a space centre in southern Kazakhstan, transporting two Russian cosmonauts and a Nasa astronaut to the International Space Station. The Soyuz craft carrying California native Tracy Caldwell Dyson and Russians Alexander Skvortsov and Mikhail Kornienko rose from the Baikonur cosmodrome on schedule. The craft, which thundered into orbit at more than eight-thousand miles per hour about ten minutes into the flight, is scheduled to dock with the space station on Sunday. Live pictures broadcast from the craft during take-off showed expedition head Skvortsov smiling as a toy duck nicknamed "Quack" dangled overhead.      Hurricane Earl has battered North Carolina's coast with rain, winds and waves and is swirling up the US east coast towards New England and Canada as a weakened but still dangerous storm. The impact of the Category 2 storm appears to be less than originally expected as Earl churns north parallel to the US Atlantic coast hours after it was downgraded from a Category 4 hurricane. Local emergency officials said no casualties or major structural damage had been reported so far. At least one coastal road was cut off by waves washing over it. "Certainly conditions are not as severe as they could have been," said Sandy Sanderson, the director of emergency services in Dare County. Earl was gusting at a sustained top windspeed of 105 miles per hour and its centre passed east of the Outer Banks islands that jut into the Atlantic, the US National Hurricane Center said.   • Hostage taken at Discovery HQ in US
     An Asian man who police believe may have explosives strapped to his body has taken at least one hostage in the Discovery Channel headquarters building in suburban Washington. Police sealed off the area around the building and SWAT teams were at the scene. The incident began on Wednesday afternoon. The building was evacuated and children were removed from a day-care centre. "He appears to have some sort of explosive device on his person," Captain Paul Starks told reporters. He said the police were in contact with the suspect, who had made some demands that authorities would not reveal. "I don't know anything about his history," Mr Starks said when asked by reporters about any possible relationship the gunman may have with Discovery. Local media reported that police said the man's name was James J Lee. A man named James Lee of San Diego was arrested in February 2008 after throwing money into the air in a protest outside the Discovery building, a local newspaper reported that year. Montgomery County Police Corporal Dan Friz said of the suspect: "His concerns are with the Discovery Corporation right now." He would not go into further details. "There may be some other potential devices with him, or near him that he brought in, but again none of this has been confirmed," he said to reporters.
