- Toyota to Recall Vehicles in South Africa
Toyota Motor Corp will recall vehicles in South Africa due to accelerator pedal problems. The company has not confirmed the number of vehicles to be recalled.Japan?s Toyota Motor Corp will extend its recall of more than eight million vehicles to include South Africa. Toyota?s recall began in North America for sticky accelerator pedals two weeks ago and has spread to most regions of the world. The company has not confirmed the number of vehicles to be recalled in South Africa and did not forsee massive losses.[Leo Kok, Public Relations Manager]: ?In terms of business for us it's a pre-emptive measure, it's not a problem that we've seen happening and I believe people will see this - that we are being proactive. So we don't foresee a big impact on our business in SouthAfrica.?Toyota however, has said its biggest-ever safety recall would cost it up to two billion U.S. dollars this quarter.Kok says the company has done everything necessary to ensure the safety of its customers and not all problems are preventable.[Leo Kok, Public relations Manager]: ?The problem if you look at the actual instances where the accelerator pedal has actually gotten stuck, it's very few. But I believe it's to the credit of Toyota for being responsible and making this a global recall, but the actual instances of where this happened and the conditions that haveto be there for this to happen is so rare that it's quite difficult to foresee every circumstance.?South Africa has the largest vehicle manufacturing industry on the continent. Heavy rainfall and strong winds ahead of the arrival of cyclone Laila have people on alert in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, India. [Arackaparambil Kurian Antony, Indian Defense Minister]: (English) "Our armed forces, Navy, Air Force and Army, are always ready to help the civil administration whenever they are in distress. So, whatever help is needed from the Navy and other armed forces, we will extend it." The state government has opened over 120 relief camps. Rescue teams have reached the hard-hit areas with the most rainfall. Due to the cyclone alert, train and bus services have been cancelled in many parts of the state. - "Avatar" Director Talks 3D in South Korea
?Avatar? director James Cameron is in South Korea today. Talking at a technology forum in Seoul, he said film makers and TV producers can't be afraid to shoot in 3D. "Avatar" is the highest earning film at the box office, taking in more than $2 billion. It was one of the most expensive movies to make with a budget of at least $300 million, due in part to its 3D filming. Cameron says it will be cost effective for TV producers to learn to shoot in 3D in the long run. [James Cameron, Director]: English "By doing it (converting 2D into 3D) afterwards, the film maker is robbed of the creative moment of working in 3D. It's a little bit like asking a film maker to make their film in black and white and then 'we will turn it into color for you' afterwards." He says the cost of shooting in 3D will fall and there's not going to be the time or the money to covert 2D into 3D. Both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics released 3D television sets earlier this year and Japan?s Sony Corp will enter the 3D fray this summer. But growth is being slowed by high costs for content makers. [James Cameron, Director]: English "Koreans like to adopt technology early, very early, and be right at the leading edge of the curve. So the Korean consumers could actually help drive 3D TV and I know that there's a project right now to do a satellite 3D channel. So, you've got the channel, you've got the sets, what we need to do now is? the missing piece is content." Manufacturers hope the change to 3D will be a big a boost for the industry. The expect to sell 15 million 3D TVs over the next three years.Author: NTDTVTags: Avatar Director Talks South Korea James Cameron technology forum film makers producers Posted: 14 May 2010Rating: 0.0Votes: 0

A single-decker bus was travelling along the N1 Highway to Cape Town. The driver reportedly lost control and the vehicle overturned. - South Africa's Ruling Party Reins in Youth Leader
Yesterday South Africa's ruling African National Congress, or ANC, has urged restraint from its militant youth leader and other members. It's asked them to refrain from singing racial inflammatory songs. It comes in the wake of the murder of white supremacist Eugene Terre'blanche last weekend. [Gwede Mantashe, Secretary-General]: (Male, English) "The message that we have communicated to all our structures including Malema himself as the president of the youth league, is that restrain yourself, don't put yourself in a position where you become scapegoats for other agendas. That is the message that we have sent to him, we have sent it to him, we have sent it to other structures." Terre'blanche's Afrikaner Resistance Movement and opposition parties have linked the killing to sentiment fuelled by the president of the ANC Youth League, Julius Malema, and his singing of a song from the era of the struggle against apartheid. [Gwede Mantashe, Secretary-General]: (Male, English) "Nobody must put pressure on us and want to have an instant solution, because our view is that this hysteria about whether we met Malema yesterday, and told him specifically not to sing this song. It's a hysteria that is actually short-sighted, narrow and will not help us find solutions." The ANC has rejected any link between the song and the murder, but President Jacob Zuma has appealed for calm two months before South Africa is due to host the soccer World Cup. Terre'blanche, who fought to preserve white rule in the 1990s, was brutally murdered on Saturday. Police say the murder resulted from a dispute over pay with two black farm workers. They were charged with his murder on Tuesday.Author: NTDTVTags: South Africas Ruling Party Reins Youth Leader African National Congress ANC leader inflammatory songs Eugene Terreblanche structures Malema scapegoats Posted: 08 April 2010Rating: 0.0Votes: 0

- Extra World Cup South Africa tickets go on sale
About 700 people pushed and shoved and organisers threatened to shut down a World Cup ticket centre in Johannesburg as fans crowded outside, only to discover later that FIFA's computer systems had crashed inside. Two hours into Friday's final release, no one had been able to buy any of the 160,000 tickets still available for the world's biggest football tournament. FNB, the bank which acts as a World Cup ticket distributor in South Africa, said FIFA's ticketing system crashed again on Friday morning due to a volume overload. Chief organiser Danny Jordaan said he wanted to "sincerely apologise" to the fans, some of whom had been queuing for two days, for Friday's problems. People forced their way into the queues, according to fans, and some were pushed up against the doors of the ticket centre. Meanwhile, in another incident, police said two hotel workers stole money from members of Colombia's football team, who were in South Africa for a friendly against the World Cup host. A police spokesman said on Friday that the Colombian players' hotel rooms were cleaned while they were training on Tuesday, and when they returned they discovered cash was missing. - North Korea to sever all military ties with South
Relations between the two Koreas reached a new level of tension on Thursday as the North announced it would scrap military agreements signed with its southern neighbour. The announcement is a response to Seoul's anti-submarine drills staged in disputed border waters. China, North Korea's main ally and source of economic support, is considering reviewing its ties with the hermit state a week after an international investigation accused North Korea of sinking a Southern warship, killing 46 people. North Korea accused the South of pushing ten years of improved diplomatic relations into the ground and said it would cancel pacts guaranteeing cross-border exchanges. The move is seen as a first step that could ultimately result in Pyongyang severing all ties with the South, including a border link providing access to a joint industrial complex in the Northern city of Keasong. After the South carried out a naval exercise and raised its alert level, the North said it would cancel military agreements designed to prevent confrontations. The US is trying to prevent the crisis from escalating into war by concentrating all diplomatic efforts on China, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton asking Beijing to press Pyongyang's regime into changing its ways. Reports suggest that South Korea will invoke the UN Security Council to take up the issue early next week, Beijing has yet to officially accept the international investigation results. Seoul officials anticipate some form of progress on Friday as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is due to visit the Southern capital for a summit with South Korea's President Lee Myung-bak. The Ministry for Civil Defence, Emergencies and Elimination of Consequences of Natural Disasters said 21 fires across 42 acres were burning in the region. Russian news agency Itar-Tass said fire-fighting planes had managed to put out blazes on around 29 acres of land over the weekend. As a result, the Russian capital has been shrouded in a fog, causing breathing difficulties for many residents. Itar-Tass reported that the smoke had reduced visibility in parts of the city to below 300-500 metres, and was disrupting traffic, with situation in the south, southeast and east of the city the worst. In Moscow's outskirts, crops have been destroyed by the fires, causing huge financial losses to farmers. Wildlife has also been affected. The worst affected areas have not seen any rain since May. - North Korean Dancer Imprisoned for What She Knew
Seventy-two-year old Kim Young-soon was once a celebrated dancer in North Korea, rubbing shoulders with the country's elite and once meeting future leader Kim Jong-il. That all changed when authorities found out that she knew too much about his love life, putting her into a political prison for nine years where she says she was left to fight for her life. [Kim Young-Soon, North Korean Defector]: "I had no idea about the existence of political prisons. I thought I could go back home after finishing the investigation. I wrote everything with that hope. I never imagined the North Korean system would bring me such harsh disadvantage (because of what I had heard)." She happened to be friends with one of North Korea's leading actresses, Sung Hye-rim, who was in a relationship with the married Kim Jong-il and with whom she had a son in 1971. Kim Young-soon's knowledge of the secret love affair was enough to turn her into a criminal in the state's eyes, as the future leader was trying to keep the relationship from his father, Kim Il-sung, due to the sensitive issue of succession in Asia's only communist dynasty. She only found out in 1989 why she had been thrown into prison. [Kim Young-Soon, North Korean Defector]: "The investigator told me that Sung Hye-rim was not Kim Jong-il's wife and didn't give birth to his son, saying they were false rumours. He told me that I will never be forgiven if I tell it to anybody or hear about it." She eventually escaped to South Korea and now works as a dance instructor and was choreographer for a musical about the North's political prisons.Author: NTDTVTags: North Korean Dancer Imprisoned for What She Knew Kim Young-soon communist Posted: 06 February 2010Rating: 5.0Votes: 1
- Sand Mining Affects Agriculture in Western India
The continuous illegal sand mining in the rivers that flow through Surat City of India's western Gujarat state by builders has two serious side effects ? it alters the natural course of the rivers and not enough water for crops mean less money in farmers? pockets. [Subodh Nayak, Farmer, Navsari, Gujarat]: "Illegal ways of sieving out sand from the river has adversely affected our agriculture fields, and our produce has also gone down. Compared to last year, my produce has gone down by 50 percent. We have made complaints against this but the administration is not doing anything." Some of the rivers impacted are the Ambika, Kaveri Purna, Tapi and the Khapra. Due to the impact of excessive mechanized sand mining and hydraulic dredging activities in these rivers, South Gujarat is under severe threat of what seems like an imminent disaster. The state administration refutes this charge. [Manoj Gajre, Deputy Collector, Navsari, Gujarat]: "The Geology and Mining Department of the Gujarat government are strictly observing it. The sand mining work is all legal and proper as per the need and the licenses given. Royalty is also provided, and if somebody is suffering through a loss, then the village council can stop it anytime and cancel the process." However, one non-governmental organization in the state is working to save these rivers and protect farmers' rights. [Jayesh Nayak, Ambika river Bkaho Bono Defence Campaign]: "Due to the constant sieving of sand from the rivers, these rivers have developed 40-70 percent of huge cavities inside them. And this sand mining has also made the water saline, which has in turn made sources of these water bodies more saline. Due to all this, the fertile land of the farmers has also gone saline, and that is the reason behind the produce depleting by almost 20-30 percent." The NGO says that the administration's claims are false and nothing has been done even after farmers made several complaints.Author: NTDTVTags: continuous illegal rivers Surat City Indias western Gujarat builders water farmers? pockets agriculture fields Posted: 02 January 2010Rating: 5.0Votes: 1

- Hyundai Motor Halts Sonata Sales
South Korea's Hyundai Motor has stopped U.S. sales of its 2011 Sonata sedan due to door lock issues, sending its shares down more than 4 percent Wednesday. It?s concerned that it could become snared in a damaging recall crisis like Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp.Hyundai notified dealers late on Monday of potential faults in the front door latches of the new model that could affect 5,000 vehicles. The stop-sale order was put into effect at U.S. dealers Tuesday, according to the company. But analysts drew a line between Toyota's recall woes and Hyundai's decision to suspend sales of the revamped Sonata, saying its shares would return to normal in one or two days.[Song sang-hun, Kyobo Securities]: "That (door lock faults) would not have been a big problem if the world was not concerned about the Toyota issue. The market just over-reacted.
