    The Allman Brothers Band est un groupe de rock américain originaire de Macon (Géorgie). Le groupe acquis une énorme popularité dans les années 1970. Tout comme le groupe Lynyrd Skynyrd, ils contribuèrent à populariser les mélodies et les sonorités propres au rock sudiste (southern rock). Débuts Le groupe se forme pour la première fois à Jacksonville (Floride) le 26 mars 1969. Il rassemble alors six musiciens: Duane Allman (guitare mélodique, slide guitar) Gregg Allman (chant, orgue) Dickey Betts (guitare soliste, chant) Berry Oakley (guitare basse) Butch Trucks (percussions) Jay Johanny Jaimoe Johanson (batterie) Les frères Allman, Duane et Gregg, appartenaient précédemment à un groupe amateur The Escorts rebaptisé Allman Joys puis finalement The Hour Glass. The Hour Glass sortit deux albums médiocres chez Liberty Records: Hour Glass et Power of Love respectivement en 1967 et 1968. Liberty rompit le contrat avec tous les membres, sauf Gregg Allman susceptible, d'après Liberty, d'avoir quelque potentiel commercial. Duane, de son côté, participe à quelques enregistrements aux studios de Muscle Shoals (Alabama) en particulier sur l'album Ton-Ton Macoute! de Johnny Jenkins le son du groupe contient ce mélange unique de jazz, de musique classique, de hard rock et de blues qui devient l'identité musicale du groupe. The Allman Brothers reçut l'honneur d'être le dernier groupe à se produire sur la scène du Fillmore avant sa fermeture en juin. L'ultime spectacle qu'ils délivrèrent devint légendaire, notamment parce que le groupe joua littéralement toute la nuit. En 2005, Gregg Allman racontait comment les musiciens avaient perdu toute notion du temps, ne réalisant qu'il était l'aube qu'à l'ouverture des portes du Fillmore.     Tiger Rag Mills Brothers 1932 The Mills Brothers The early years The group was originally composed of four brothers all born in Piqua, Ohio, just 25 miles north of Dayton: John Jr. (1911-1936) basso and guitarist, Herbert (1912-1989) tenor, Harry (1913-1982) baritone, and Donald (1915-1999) lead tenor. They entered an amateur contest at Piqua's Mays Opera House. That fateful day, while on stage, Harry discovered he had lost his kazoo. He cupped his hands to his mouth and imitated a trumpet. The success of his imitation led to all the brothers taking on instruments to imitate and created their early signature sound. John Jr. accompanied the four-part harmony first with a ukulele and then a guitar. The Rise To Stardom Then in 1928, after playing May's Opera House in Piqua between Rin Tin Tin features, they accompanied the Harold Greenameyer Band to Cincinnati for an audition with radio station WLW. The Band was not hired, but the Mills brothers were. With the help of Seger Ellis, WLW Cincinnati DJ and a music legend of the '20s, they quickly became local radio stars and got their major break when Duke Ellington and his Orchestra played a date in Cincinnati. When the youngsters sang for Duke, he was so impressed he called Tommy Rockwell at Okeh Records, who signed them and brought the group to New York. Their very first record recorded for Brunswick, a cover of the Original Dixieland Jass Band standard "Tiger Rag" became a nationwide seller, the only record at that time to sell more than a million copies. They had their own popular radio series in 1932-1933, one of the earliest built around a black act, billed as the "Four Boys and a Guitar". Before their show announcers commonly explained to listeners that the only instrument was a guitar, as the vocal effects made many listeners think they were hearing a muted trumpet, saxophone, and string bass. Duane, de son côté, participe à quelques Tragédie et triomphe Duane Allman décède peu après que At Fillmore East soit certifié disque d'or, victime d'un accident de moto le 29 octobre 1971 à Macon (Géorgie). La perte de leur leader fut très dure à encaisser pour le groupe, mais il décidèrent rapidement de continuer. L'album se répand progressivement sur les ondes, certaines stations diffusant même des morceaux de 13 ou 23 minutes, cependant la plupart des auditeurs ignore le décès du leader du groupe. Dickey Betts remplace Duane à la guitare pour achever le dernier album auquel il a participé: Eat a Peach. Le groupe joue quelques concerts à cinq, puis décide d'enrôler Chuck Leavell, un pianiste, afin d'ajouter un nouveau soliste sans remplacer directement Duane. C'est ce nouveau line-up qui se produit sur ABC dans l'émission In Concert. Peu après, le 11 novembre 1972, Berry Oakley décède à son tour dans un accident de moto, à seulement trois pâtés de maison du lieu où Duane s'est tué.
